Medicaid Programs

Medicaid

Medicaid is a medical assistance program regulated by the Federal government, supervised by State government, and administered by County Government. The program is funded by each of the three governmental agencies. Services provided by the Medicaid programs include but are not limited to six prescriptions a month, twenty-four physicians visits, hospitalizations, eye and dental care each year and assistance with cost of care in a long-term care facility (nursing home). Medicaid provides assistance with medical care expenses to low income families with children, pregnant women, disabled adults and the elderly.

Health Choice for Children

North Carolina Health Choice for children provides medical assistance for uninsured children when the family income is at or below 200% of poverty level.  This program began October 1, 1998.

Special Assistance

Provides a monthly payment to help pay the cost of care in an adult care home.

Work First Family Assistance (WFFA)

Financial and medical assistance for dependent minor children who are deprived of parental care and support of both parents. This program focuses on employment and self-sufficiency.

Carolina Access

Carolina Access (CA) is medicaid’s primary case management program that contracts with physicians to deliver and coordinate recipient health care.  Each eligible recipient is required to select a physician from a list of participating providers. The primary goals of Carolina Access are to:

  1. improve access to primary care for Medicaid recipients;
  2. establish comprehensive patient/physician relationships;
  3. reduce inappropriate use of emergency room services;
  4. improve and increase primary care physician participation in Medicaid;
  5. promote the preventive aspects of health care; and
  6. optimize the state and counties’ investment in health care for recipients.
